Cable Wiring Color Code Charts

Comprehensive reference for NEC (North American) and IEC (International/European) cable color standards. Covers AC power, DC power, grounding, control wiring, and instrumentation -- essential for engineers, electricians, and procurement professionals specifying cables for global projects.

NEC / NFPA 70 IEC 60446 IEC 60757 AS/NZS 3000 BS 7671

Important: Color codes are for reference only. Always verify against the applicable local electrical code, project specifications, and cable manufacturer documentation before installation. Color standards may vary by country, voltage level, and application.

AC Power Wiring Color Codes

AC power wiring color identification for single-phase and three-phase systems. Standards differ significantly between North American (NEC) and international (IEC) conventions.

Black

Hot / Line 1

Phase conductor carrying current. Used for the first hot wire in single-phase 120V circuits.

White

Grounded conductor. Returns current to source. Must be white or gray per NEC 200.6.

Green

Ground (PE)

Equipment grounding conductor. Green, green/yellow stripe, or bare copper. NEC 250.119.

Grounding & Protective Earth Color Codes

Protective earth (PE) and grounding conductor identification is among the most safety-critical color coding requirements. Standards are largely harmonized globally, but important differences exist.

Green / Yellow

IEC / EU / Most International

Mandatory bicolor stripe. IEC 60446 requires green/yellow for PE conductors. Most widely used standard globally.

IEC 60446 · BS 7671 · AS/NZS

Green (solid)

NEC -- North America

Solid green or green with yellow stripe. Bare copper also permitted. NEC 250.119 specifies equipment grounding conductor.

NEC 250.119 · NFPA 70

Bare Copper

NEC / Common Practice

Uninsulated bare copper conductor. Common for equipment grounding in conduit systems and ground bus connections.

Multi-Core Control Cable Color Sequence

For multi-core control cables (4-37 cores), IEC 60446 and GB/T 3956 define a standardized color sequence. Jinda KVV/KVVP control cables follow this sequence:

1 · Black 2 · Brown 3 · Red 4 · Orange 5 · Yellow 6 · Green 7 · Blue 8 · Violet 9 · White 10 · Grey 11 · Pink 12 · Light Blue

Cores beyond 12 repeat with number markings or use sequential numbering per IEC 60446 Table 2.
